Fake Roseville

There are several imported Roseville fakes on the market.  Most seem to originate from the Pacific rim countries and there is a LOT of it!

This Chinese fake of Roseville "Pinecone" vase sold on eBay for $152.50 on March 30, 2005.  Buyer Beware!  Here are a few things wrong with this vase that indicate it is a fake:

Should not be high glaze.
Color, while close, is wrong.
Branch handles poorly detailed.
Pinecone is poorly defined, even for the worst mold on an original Roseville vase.
Original Pinecone design sits slightly higher and nearer to the top of the vase.
Mark on the bottom is fake, Rv original incised mark is smaller and commonly hard to see at first glance.

This in another Chinese fake.  It is an attempt at a Roseville "Woodland" design on a "Pauleo" type blank.  The fake mark is shown in the right photo.  Things to look for in this fake:
  • Should not be high glaze.
  • Should not have gold rim.
  • Stippling should be incised into piece, not pebbly on exterior
  • Flower is too low on vase.
  • Real vase is more slender.

For the genuine item, see Plate 16 (center), Page 45 of "The Collectors Encyclopedia of Roseville, First Series," Sharon & Bob Huxford, Collectors Books, 1984

Genuine mark is less oval; "Roseville" and "Pottery" form a circle, not an oval.

For the genuine mark, see Mark 13, Page 26 of "The Collectors Encyclopedia of Roseville, First Series," Sharon & Bob Huxford, Collectors Books, 1984

On the left is a photo of a Chinese fake of the Roseville "Luffa" Wall Pocket.  The detail of the design is a bit off and not crisp, but the best indication that this is a fake is the primary color.  Roseville did not make this design in the dark blue/blue-black color shown.

The photos on the right show a Chinese fake "Magnolia" ewer and its bottom mark.  These were submitted by member Norman Haas.

This is a Chinese fake of the Roseville "Panel" Nude Wallpocket.  The photo on the right shows the fake backstamp.  Roseville did not make their Panel Nude in this glaze color.
